Chairman’s Report

Mary welcomed everyone in particular new members.  The 2017 activities were summarized as follows:

Sara organized a photoshoot where 27 items were photographed.  If anyone didn’t receive their images please contact Mary.  If anyone would like a photoshoot for 2018 please contact Mary.

The Play exhibition was taken to Sligo : 13 members works were exhibited  from 13 June – 6 July in the Yeats Memorial Canter in Sligo with a very positive response.  Huge thanks to Mary for organizing this event.

Home : an exhibition of work by CTN took place at the CCD exhibition 17 Aug – 3 Sept where 15 CTN members submitted 37 pieces of work including product.  No fees were taken as no expenses were incurred, CCD took 20% commission on sales.  There was a very positive response to this event it was a great opportunity for CTN to exhibit at the widely advertised and marketed event in Kinsale.

Community Arts Project is currently ongoing.  The work from all workshops will be exhibited in the County Hall exhibition centre date TBC in November by Emer Fenlon (co-ordinator).  The work may be also shown at the Glucksman at a future date.  Workshops : Crawford Art gallery have offered a tour of the collection this will take place on 19 October at 2.30pm.The wider membership of CTN is also invited please email Lesley ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Membership?

Emer will step down as the membership secretary.  Hilda has offered to do this as part of the Treasurer’s role until February 2018 to allow another member to take over the Membership Secretary role.If there is anyone in the group who would like to get involved in the committee it is a great way to get to know members and get to meet people and be involved in the group.  It is not a taxing job.  Please consider this.  Huge thanks to Emer for carrying out this job for several years.

The following are the new membership categories:

Associate membership :

A lot of queries are made at the Knitting and Stitching show to Amanda regarding associate membership.

This would suit people who are not members and not practitioners.  A suggested fee for associate membership was €10 per year.   Benefits: talks, event invitations and Newsletter.  This was agreed at the meeting that mature students come into this category also.

Full membership:

Full members would receive a discount on events,  the details of which would be ironed out for every event.  Full members can in addition to the above participate in all exhibitions, exhibition openings, skills exchanges. 

Free membership categories:

  1. a.Refugees from Kinsale Road Direct Provision Centre would like associateInvolvement in the local community is important for the refugees.  Lesley made a case for a FREE category.  A complimentary communication could be sent to the individuals concerned.  It is likely to be done on a yearly basis.
  2. b./ child membership in secondary school or younger are free also.

Sue Stone Workshop and Talk

Lesley has organized a 2 day workshop and talk with Sue Stone to take place. The workshop is full with a waiting list.  There are plenty of places available for the talk at the Crawford Gallery ( by the Opera house) on the afternoon of Friday 13th at 3pm.  Please book on eventbrite for your ticket and it is a FREE event.  Please attend on time there is an hour talk and a session for a Q and A.  We need to exit the building promptly at 5pm. On Sue Stone : Lesley would like some help on the day of the talk for door duty  and seating. Please bring a packed lunch for the workshop.

Stitch a Tree Project by Alice Kettle

Knitting and Stitching 2017

The largest number of entries to date have  been put forward to Amanda.  The gallery space will be 9x8m.  Amanda is aiming to hang everything that she is accepting.  Amanda will be looking for volunteers to assist with the stand for a couple of hours during the day from Thursday onwards.  The hanging team is in place.  There is a folder available with the work.  They have lots of workshops  and exhibitions that you can attend.  Please contact Amanda on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. CSM Exhibition

The theme of the exhibition is Passing Through at Cork School of Music.

 

Hanging will take place Saturday 25 November 2017.  4 people are required. Emer, Mary, Veronica Cremin, Martina Carroll and Anne Kiley all volunteered.

Bishopstown Library Feb 2018 The Silk Road

Sara O’Hara is managing this exhibition.  Planned Launch will be  3 Feb  2018

Hanging date 1 Feb with drop off 10am-12.

2018 Activities – 20th Anniversary

Amanda has taken on the role of 2018 co-ordinator.  This is a summary of the planned activities for 2018:

Textile Bombing: Martina is co-ordinating this activity and is looking for people who might be interested in contributing small work that can be stitched together to make something bigger.  You can work at home and not attend the groups.  The group is contemplating a number of projects such as fish, the bollards on Emmet place eg tutus (ballet school).  Work will be positioned around March /April weather depending.  Please contact Martina : This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you are interested in being involved.  Next  meeting: Saturday 4th November at the Bishopstown Library.  Everyone is most welcome to attend this meeting just to see the great work that has been carried out to date.

Party: Arlene has proposed the 28th April 2018 for a party open to everyone.  Please put the date in your diary.  You will need to put your name down when the information is available.  This is open to past members also.  There will be a set price per head.

Member Videos: 3 almost completed another 9 being planned.  Planning on releasing one per month over the year of 2018. Book : Hilda is gathering images and information from the past 20 years from past and present members.  Everyone is entitled to be included.  Please contact Hilda on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  A possible exhibition associated with the book launch was suggested by Hilda.   Huge thanks to Hilda for taking on this project and please support her by providing images of your work ASAP.

Knitting and Stitching Show 2018

Dublin, Alexandra Palace and Harrogate.  In conjunction with Sue Stone Amanda would like as many members as possible to make a self portrait in any medium.  16x12 canvases are available from Amanda for €2 ea.  There is no fee to take part in the exhibition.  The brief is available on the web site.  Please don’t make your piece 3D and it needs to be secure for 3 exhibitions.  Any questions please email Amanda. The canvases will also be available at the Sue Stone talk and at the next meeting in February.  Please make sure that the work is larger than the A3 canvas in order to fold over the 4 edges.

The second exhibition will be curated and will be making a piece of work in reference to a book.  Any form or size.  This will be a member’s only curated by an invited curator. 

Curated Art Textile Exhibition : Being co-ordinated by Helen Stringer will run in the Crawford gallery in Oct/Nov 2018 TBC.  This exhibition will be curated by Anne Boeardt of the Crawford Art Gallery.  More information to follow.

Hanging system: the committee is considering the purchase of a hanging system that could be used with a picture rail.  We anticipate that it will make the hanging easier. 

Invitations: We haven’t created invitations over the past 2 years.  This would mean a PDF invite only (and Including the YEAR is important).  This was supported by all.

PRO for 2018.  PR will be beneficial to cover all of the events being carried out in 2018.  If there are any members who have experience in this area would be welcome to join the committee.  Please contact Mary Palmer if you would like to assist with this on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
