Christina Jasmin Roser, textile artist & feltmaker based in West Cork.
I had my first encounter with feltmaking in 1998 and it immediately became my passion and it sparked a desire to learn more about this ancient craft, which offers so many possibilities. I am fascinated by the process of manipulating loose wool fibres with only soapy water and my hands transforming them into a sturdy material. How cool is it that you are actually able to make a garment in a single piece without the use of scissors, needle or thread?
When combining a fabric with the wool fibres to make what is known as nuno felt, a whole new dimension and expression can be added. You can then take this further and combine pre-felts, resist shaping, print, eco and shibori dying and stitching to open up totally new possibilities.
At present I am also experimenting with block printing in combination with nuno felt. How can a specific image or message be fixed to the surface without loosing itself through the process of shrinkage?
Christina runs felt making workshops from her studio in West Cork and is also happy to work to commission.
